Network Update

Network Update: Amtrak derailment on Hi Line subdivision
On the afternoon of September 25, a westbound Amtrak train derailed several cars near Joplin, Montana, on BNSF’s Hi Line Sub, with no route around. BNSF teams have been working closely with Amtrak and local authorities, and we appreciate the efforts of local first responders who are assisting with this incident. The cause of the incident is under investigation and BNSF will coordinate with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) team. Our deepest sympathies are with the families of those who lost their lives, as well as the injured.
BNSF teams are holding track restoration efforts until scene assessment and release by NTSB, which is still pending as of the morning of 9/27. Once released, track restoration is expected to take approximately 14 hours.
There are currently more than 30 trains staged for this outage. MRL reroutes are being leveraged as crew and capacity supports. Prioritizing loaded grain and Z trains for reroutes. Amtrak has made adjustments to trains and will provide limited service between Chicago and St. Paul operating scheduled route over CP.
